What's an auto belay?

Traditionally, top rope climbing involves two people - the climber and the belayer. As the climber ascends the wall, the belayer takes up slack in the rope through a belay device. With a brake hand on the rope at all times, the belayer controls the descent of the climber and is also responsible for applying a braking technique in the event of a fall.

An auto belay is an automatic belay device that eliminates the need for a human belayer. In the case of the TRUBLUE Auto Belay, we use a patented self-regulating braking system, which is enabled by non-contacting magnetic braking technology. The auto belay takes up the slack as a climber ascends and controls the descent when the climber reaches the top or in the event of a fall. Rather than requiring one human belayer per climber, auto belay devices allows multiple climbers on the wall with one person as a supervisor.

Why use a Trublue auto belay?

Bottom line, incorporating the TruBlue auto belays into your facility helps you increase revenue while reducing costs and risk.

  • Attract single climbers: With a Trublue auto belay, climbers don't need to rely on having a partner every time they visit your facility. Single climbers can come in whenever their schedule allows, giving them the opportunity to visit your facility more frequently.
  • Reduce barriers to entry: Climbing can be intimidating for beginners, and climbing wall operators can attract more new participants by minimizing the barriers to entry. TruBlue Auto belays eliminate the need for belayer training and testing, allowing new participants to just clip in and climb. This also makes TruBlue auto belay devices perfect for venues that attract infrequent climbers, like amusement parks and resorts.
  • Provide a unique endurance training tool: Using a TruBlue auto belay device gives single climbers the ability to climb up and down routes continuously without the need to take turns with their climbing partner. The result is an endurance workout much more intense that in traditional indoor climbing.
  • Increase programming while decreasing staff costs: Having modular TruBLue auto belays allows you to hold more classes, birthday parties, clinics and other group programming while keeping staff costs to a minimum. Simply move the auto belay devices to the areas where they are most needed for your programming schedule and fewer staff members will be needed to belay or supervise your climbers.
  • Minimize your facility risk: The biggest risk in running a climbing facility are falls related to belayer human error. Trublue Auto belay devices eliminate the human error factor from the equation, reducing your risk.

BUYING AN AUTO BELAY

All auto belays are not created equal. When evaluating an auto belay device for purchase, consider the following:

Safety

Did you know that auto belays are not governed by the same standards as other climbing industry equipment? In fact, there is no climbing industry standard pertaining to auto belay devices. TRUBLUE is the only auto belay device engineered to meet the same international safety standards pertaining to other climbing gear. You wouldn’t climb with a harness that wasn’t designed for safety. Why take your chances with an auto belay?

Modular or Stationary?

Modular auto belays are compact, easy to install and move as needed, and can be used with any climbing wall. Modular auto belays give you flexibility to move your auto belay devices to accommodate a class, birthday party or other group programming.

Stationary auto belays are much larger and heavier, and are permanently mounted behind the climbing wall, often requiring professional installation. Permanently mounted auto belay devices cannot be shipped back to the manufacturer for maintenance or re-certification. Accessing these stationary auto belays for required inspections can be difficult and lighting is often poor, resulting in missed or incomplete inspections.

What Type of Technology?

  • Magnetic: non-contacting self-regulating magnetic braking system with no wearing parts. No limit to the number of climbing cycles between annual certification inspections. Annual re-certifications are inexpensive.
  • Friction Brake Pad: Brake pad system with expensive wearing parts. Low limits on the number of climbing cycles before servicing is required. Servicing is more expensive.
  • Hydraulic: pressurized air/oil hydraulic system with a potential for messy hydraulic fluid leaks and need to re-pressurize. Installation and access can be challenging. Factory service and re-certification is generally not possible.

Cable or Webbing?

Cable-based systems can cause damage to climbing walls if the cable contacts the wall.  Webbing-based systems, like the TRUBLUE, will not damage walls.  Plus, climbers prefer webbing due to its more natural feel.  In the case of the TRUBLUE, the webbing can be easily replaced in the field.

Maintenance and Servicing

The price of an auto belay is only a piece of the overall cost of owning the unit. Maintenance requirements and servicing costs can vary greatly by product. Cable replacement in cable-based systems is expensive, and costs for site visits by servicing technicians for stationary/fixed auto belays can be high as well. The webbing replacement for the TRUBLUE auto belay is a minimal expense, and annual servicing costs are a fraction of onsite service visit costs.

BENEFITS

Using an auto belay in your facility reduces wall operating costs, attracts more climbers and makes climbing even more fun. The TRUBLUE auto belay gives you additional unique benefits beyond other auto belays.

Advanced Technology

  • Smooth descent: The self-regulating braking system has minimal variation in the descent rate of a child (at 22 lbs./10 kg min.) and an adult (at 330 lbs./150 kg max).
  • Reliability with no sacrificial wear parts: Non-contacting magnetic technology with a reliable self-regulating backup system.

Safety

  • Meets international safety standards: TRUBLUE is designed for climbers and engineered for safety. We engineered TRUBLUE to meet international safety standards for fall arrest devices.
  • Extensive product and manufacturing testing: For over four years, the TRUBLUE auto belay has undergone extensive testing by an ISO 17025 accredited company specializing in product testing.
  • No clutch bearing: The TRUBLUE has been engineered to eliminate the need for one-way clutch bearings. This eliminates a key potential point of failure that is present in other auto belay designs, as well as the need to maintain and replace these mechanisms.
  • Gentle whirring noise: Our auto belay makes a gentle whirring noise as the climber descends, alerting those below of a descending climber.

Flexibility

  • Simple to install and easy to relocate: Compact modular unit designed to be hung from a top anchor. Just one step and no cost. Units can be moved to accommodate classes, birthday parties and other group activities, reducing staffing costs.
  • Maximum descent height of 65 feet (19.8 m): TRUBLUE XL Auto Belay provides the longest range of all modular systems.
  • Accommodates a wide range of climber weights: The TRUBLUE allows for a weight range of 22 – 330 lbs (10 to 150 kg), making it the ideal auto belay system for facilities with a wide audience of children and adults.

Minimal Maintenance Requirements and Costs

  • Webbing based system: Will not damage walls like cable-based systems can. Plus, webbing is preferred by climbers over cable for its more natural feel.
  • Reduced webbing wear: Unique field-replaceable webbing delivery nozzle significantly reduces webbing wear.
  • Minimal Maintenance: Webbing replacement for the TRUBLUE is significantly less expensive than cable replacement for other types of auto belays.
  • Low cost of ownership: An annual re-certification inspection is required with a low cost of $199. The TRUBLUE has no limit on the number of cycles before annual re-certification. Because they are modular, TRUBLUE units can be sent to our servicing center should they need repair, saving you money on costly site visits for stationary/fixed auto belays.

Recommended Items:

The TRUBLUE has a number of accessory’s that are designed to make installation of your TRUBLUE easier and more efficient, and also help improve operations in your climbing facility. These include:

Mounting Kit – has what you need for installing a TRUBLUE in a climbing facility.

Universal Mount – is used on trees, poles, and climbing walls to provide an anchor point to mount a TRUBLUE Auto Belay or other climbing anchor.
